Roofing Contractors- How to Choose

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your property because it keeps the rain and snow from getting in and damaging the structure. Roof repair or roof replacement should be done by experienced roofing contractors, so the job is done properly and will last for many years. Simply selecting one from a directory is not a good idea. You must evaluate more than one to make an informed decision.

Roofing companies are not all the same. By following these helpful tips, you will be able to select the best roofer for your job.

What Experience Do the Roofing Contractors Have?

The #1 concern is what experience the roofer has. While most can do a variety of work, each seems to have extensive experience in one or two types of roofing…their specialty!

It is important that a company has been in business for at least five years. While the mechanics may have many more years’ experience, you need reasonable assurance that the company will be around for years to come. Why? Just in case problems develop and a roofer has to come back for repairs.

You don’t want to take chances with a company that has been around for two or three years, despite the experience of the owner and crew. Many companies are started by ex-mechanics. They may be excellent roofers, but not know how to run a business.

Seek Out Referrals

Make absolutely sure that you check references, by asking for referrals. At least three referrals would be enough. Perhaps you are fortunate to know someone who has had roofing work done and can get a trusted referral. When asking for referrals, always try to get ones that have had work done similar to the type you need. Getting a good referral on flat roof work, does not apply when you need shingles on a pitched roof.

Estimates Are Important, But Not the Deciding Factor:

Roofing Contractors should offer free estimates. Comparing estimates will give you a good idea what the job cost should be.

Keep in mind that all estimates may not be the same, which will make them harder to evaluate. Different contractors may have different ways of handling the job. You also need to make sure that materials used are specified in the quote. You should try to decide which material you will use for the roof with the first estimate. This way, the other estimates will be comparable. If you are unsure which material(s) to use, then have quotes done for all the materials you are considering.

The final decision should be made based on experience then price. You want the job done right the first time, which means the roofing contractor best suited for the job. Price should be your second criteria. Selecting the lowest bidder may often lead to problems down the road, especially if the bid is substantially lower.
